Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

and this can be fully appreciated only by someone who has risen above the earth’s shadow. We have witnessed this remarkable sign ourselves: when you ascend in an airplane after the sun has already set at ground level, it becomes visible to you again as you climb higher. You then see the earth as though it had been clothed in a black garment. Nothing on the earth can be seen; beneath you, all is darkness. This makes clear the meaning of Allah Most High’s words:

“And made the night a covering.”

“And made the day a time for livelihood.”

That is, a time in which people live and seek their provision according to their different stations and circumstances. This is among the blessings that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has bestowed upon His servants.

“And built above you seven mighty heavens.”

These are the seven heavens. Allah Most High described them as mighty because they are strong, as He says:

“We built the heaven with might, and We are surely its expander” [al-Dhāriyāt: 47].

That is, We built it with strength.

“And made a blazing lamp.”

This means the sun: it is a radiant lamp and also possesses tremendous heat. “Blazing” means intensely burning. Its heat on summer days is severe despite its immense distance from the earth, so what must it be like nearer to it? Moreover, during hot weather, the severity of its heat is from the scorching heat of Hell, (1) as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When the heat becomes intense, delay the prayer until it grows cooler, for intense heat is from the scorching heat of Hell.”

He, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said: “The Fire complained to Allah, saying, ‘My Lord, some parts of me have consumed others.’ He therefore permitted it two breaths: one in winter and one in summer. Thus, the most intense cold you experience is from the bitter cold of Hell, and the most intense heat is from the scorching heat of Hell.” (2)

Nevertheless, the sun provides immense benefit to creation. It saves people vast sums of money during daylight hours, when they have no need to turn on lights, and the energy harnessed from it also has many benefits,
