and escaped what he feared. ﴿The one who purifies it﴾ means the one who purifies his own soul. Purification here does not refer to the self-praise forbidden in His words: ﴿So do not claim purity for yourselves﴾ [al-Najm: 32]. Rather, it means purifying one’s soul by cleansing it of polytheism and the stains of sin, until it becomes wholesome, pure, and untainted.
﴿And failed indeed is the one who corrupts it﴾ means whoever casts it into ruin and sin. Achieving this requires supplicating Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to keep a person steadfast in obedience to Him and firm upon the steadfast word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. And He does not fear its consequences.﴾
﴿Thamūd denied the truth because of their transgression.﴾ Thamūd was the name of a tribe, and their prophet was Sālih, peace be upon him. Like the other prophets, their prophet Sālih, peace be upon him, called them to worship Allah alone, without any partner. Allah Most High says: ﴿We never sent any messenger before you without revealing to him that none has the right to be worshipped but Me, so worship Me﴾ [al-Anbiyā’: 25].
He called them to worship Allah alone, without any partner. Allah—Glorified is He—gave him a sign proving his prophethood: the great she-camel, which would drink from the well one day and provide them with milk the next. Some have said—
