of the honor and charity bestowed upon him. If he is also a relative, his share of these increases, since maintaining ties with him is obligatory. Thus, when orphanhood and kinship are combined, spending on him is one means of surmounting the steep path, provided this occurs on a day of severe famine.

“Or a needy person reduced to the dust” means feeding, on a day of severe famine, “a needy person reduced to the dust.” A needy person is someone who cannot obtain enough food for himself or his dependants.

Being “reduced to the dust” refers to having nothing but dust. It is well known that when a man is said to possess nothing but dust, it means that he is utterly impoverished: he has no food, clothing, or wealth. He is therefore a needy person reduced to the dust.

“Then he was among those who believed and exhorted one another to patience and exhorted one another to compassion.” “Then he was” means that, in addition to all this, he does not merely do good to orphans and the needy; rather, he is a man of faith who believes in everything in which belief is required. The Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, explained what one must believe in when Gabriel asked him about faith. He replied: “Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree—both its good and its evil.” (1)

His words, “and exhorted one another to patience,” mean that they urged one another to be patient. Patience is of three kinds: patience in obeying Allah, patience in refraining from disobedience to Allah, and patience in the face of Allah’s painful decrees. They are therefore patient and exhort one another to all three kinds of patience: patience in obeying Allah, then patience in refraining from disobedience to Allah, and then patience in the face of Allah’s painful decrees.

All three kinds were combined in the messengers, peace and blessings be upon them, and their followers. Here is the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, steadfast in obedience to Allah: striving in Allah’s cause, calling people to Allah, suffering harm and physical assault, until the polytheists even resolved to kill him. Despite all this, he remained patient, seeking Allah’s reward. He was likewise steadfast in refraining from disobedience to Allah; he could never
