Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:
“Does he think that no one has seen him?”
Does this man imagine that no one sees him squandering his wealth and spending it on things of no benefit? All of this warns man against becoming overbearing and arrogant because of his physical strength or abundant wealth. Allah Most High says:
“Have We not given him two eyes, a tongue and two lips, and shown him the two ways?”
These are three of the greatest blessings bestowed upon man. “Have We not given him two eyes”—that is, two eyes with which he sees and observes. These eyes convey to the heart whatever a person looks at. If he casts a forbidden glance, he incurs sin; if he looks at something that draws him nearer to Allah, he gains reward. If he looks at something permissible, he is neither praised nor blamed, unless that gaze leads to something prohibited by the Sharia, in which case he incurs sin through it.
“A tongue and two lips”—a tongue with which he speaks and two lips with which he controls his speech. This is one of Allah’s immense blessings, for by means of this tongue and these lips he can express what lies within him. Without them, he could not do so. If he were unable to speak, how could he express what was in his heart? How could he inform people of what was within him? He could do so only through laborious gestures, which would weary both the person gesturing and those to whom he gestured. It is therefore one of Allah’s blessings that He gave him a speaking tongue and two lips with which to control his speech.
This is a blessing from Allah and also one of the wonders of His power. Speech arises from air originating in the lungs and emerging through specific points of articulation. When it passes one place, it becomes one letter; when it passes another, it becomes a different letter. It is one and the same air from a single source, but it passes over minute hairs in the throat, lips and gums, and these hairs form the letters. Thus, for example, the letters b and sh are both produced by air propelled from the lungs, yet they differ according to what the air passes over within the mouth and according to the well-known points of articulation. This is part of the perfection of the power of Allah, Glorified and Exalted.
“And shown him the two ways.” It has been said that this means: We made clear to him the path of good and the path of evil. According to a second view, “shown him the two ways” means that We directed him to the source of his nourishment, namely the two breasts, for both are najds (raised elevations)
