Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

the messengers have related concerning Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—and the Last Day. On that Day, man will remember, but Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—says: ﴿But how will remembrance avail him?﴾ That is, far indeed is he from benefiting from the remembrance that came to him once he had witnessed the truth.

Man will say: ﴿If only I had sent ahead for my life!﴾ He will wish that he had sent something ahead for his life. But what is his life? Is it the life of this world? No, by Allah! The life of this world has ended and passed away. In reality, worldly life is no true life; it is nothing but worries and hardships. Every moment of serenity is followed by distress, every period of health by illness, and every gathering by separation. Consider what has happened: Where are the fathers? Where are the brothers? Where are the children? Where are the spouses? Is this truly life? Thus, one of the wise poets said:

There is no sweetness in life while all its pleasures
Are marred by thoughts of death and decrepitude.

Every person remembers that his end will be one of two things: either death or decrepitude. We have known people who were once young and in the prime of youth. They were granted long lives, but then they were reduced to the most decrepit stage of life. A person pities them when he sees the wretched state they are in, however much wealth and however many relatives they may have. They nevertheless remain in a wretched state. Thus, every person either dies young or lives long enough to be reduced to the most decrepit stage of life. Is this truly life?

True life is what Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—has described: ﴿Indeed, the abode of the Hereafter is the true life, if only they knew.﴾ [al-Ankabūt: 64]. This man will say: ﴿If only I had sent ahead for my life!﴾ He will wish it, but his wish will not be fulfilled: ﴿But how will remembrance avail him?﴾

Allah Most High says: ﴿On that Day, none will punish as He punishes, and none will bind as He binds.﴾ There are two readings of this verse. The first is: ﴿None will punish as He punishes, and none will bind as He binds.﴾ That is, no one punishes as Allah punishes; rather, Allah’s punishment is more severe. Nor does anyone bind as Allah binds; rather, His binding is more severe.

The second reading is: ﴿No one will be punished as he is punished, and no one will be bound as he is bound.﴾ This means that on that Day, no one
