die therein nor live.﴿ This means that he will not die and thereby find relief, nor will he live a happy life. In reality, they are alive, but theirs is a life of torment: ﴾Whenever their skins are burned through, We will replace them with other skins﴿ [al-Nisāʾ: 56]. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, also says: ﴾They will call, “O Mālik!”﴿—Mālik being the keeper of the Fire—﴾“Let your Lord put an end to us,”﴿ meaning: let Him destroy us and relieve us of this torment. ﴾He will say, “You will surely remain.”﴿ There will be no relief, and they will be told: ﴾We certainly brought you the truth, but most of you were averse to the truth﴿ [al-Zukhruf: 78]. This is the meaning of His statement: ﴾He will neither die therein nor live.﴿ Some people may find this difficult to understand: How can a person be neither alive nor dead, when a person must be either alive or dead?
The answer is that he will not die a death that brings him relief, nor will he live a life that brings him happiness. Rather, he will remain amid torment, blazing fire, and severe distress, longing for death but never attaining it. This is the meaning of His statement, Most High: ﴾Then he will neither die therein nor live.﴿
﴾Successful indeed is whoever purifies himself * and remembers the name of his Lord and prays * But you prefer the life of this world * while the Hereafter is better and more lasting * Indeed, this is in the former scriptures * the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.﴿
﴾Successful indeed is whoever purifies himself, and remembers the name of his Lord and prays.﴿ The word “successful” is derived from success, which is a comprehensive term meaning the attainment of what one seeks and deliverance from what one fears. This is the meaning of success: it is an all-encompassing expression that embraces every good and wards off every evil.
His statement, ﴾whoever purifies himself,﴿ is derived from tazkiyah, meaning purification. This is also why zakāh is called by that name: it purifies a person of reprehensible traits, particularly miserliness, as Allah Most High says: ﴾Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify and cleanse them﴿ [al-Tawbah
