to disbelief—upon them is wrath from Allah, and they will have a tremendous punishment﴿ [al-Nahl: 106]. Therefore, we say: Act, O man! Do good and avoid evil so that Allah may ease you toward ease and keep you from hardship. Allah promised His Messenger—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—that He would ease him toward ease and make his affairs easy. For this reason, whenever the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—encountered distress and hardship, he found a way out—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
Then He Most High commanded him to remind, saying: ﴾So remind, if the reminder will be of benefit﴿. That is, remind the people: remind them of Allah’s signs, remind them of the Days of Allah, and admonish them. ﴾If the reminder will be of benefit﴿ means in a situation where the reminder will prove beneficial. Accordingly, the particle “if” is conditional, and the meaning is: if the reminder will benefit them, then remind them; but if it will not, then do not remind them, for there is no benefit in reminding people whom we know will not benefit. This is one interpretation offered of the verse.
Some scholars have said: The meaning is, “Remind in every circumstance, if the reminder will benefit these people.” The condition here is not intended to mean that one should remind only when the reminder proves beneficial. Rather, the meaning is: remind if these people are among those who can benefit from being reminded. According to this view, the meaning is: remind in every circumstance, for the reminder will bring benefit. It benefits the believers, and it also benefits the one giving the reminder. The one giving the reminder therefore benefits in every case. As for the person being reminded, if he benefits from it, he is a believer; and if he does not, that does not diminish the reminder-giver’s reward in the slightest. So remind, whether or not the reminder proves beneficial.
Some scholars have said: If one expects the reminder to be beneficial, giving it is obligatory; but if one expects it not to be beneficial, one has a choice: one may remind or refrain from doing so.
In every case, however, we say that reminding is necessary, even if you think it will not benefit others, for it will benefit you. People will also come to know that the matter about which you reminded them is either obligatory or forbidden. If you remain silent while people commit what is forbidden, they will say, “If this were forbidden, the scholars would have reminded us about it; or if this were
