—we may turn to Him in all our affairs. If we know that He is the One who created us after we had not existed, then, when illness afflicts us, we turn to Allah, for the One who created you and brought you into existence from nothing is able to restore health to your body. Therefore, turn to your Lord and rely upon Him. There is no harm in taking whatever medicine He has permitted you, but you must believe that this medicine is only one of the means appointed by Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He. If you are cured through this means, it is Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—who cured you. He is the One who made this medicine a means of your recovery; had He willed, He could have made it a cause of your death. Thus, when we know that Allah is the Creator, we turn to Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—in all our affairs. When we know that He is the Guide, we seek guidance through the guidance He has given—through His revealed law—until we attain the honor that our Lord—Mighty and Majestic is He—has prepared for us.
﴾We shall make you recite, and you will not forget, except what Allah wills. Indeed, He knows what is spoken openly and what is hidden﴿.
This is a promise from Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—to His Messenger, may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace, that He would teach him to recite the Quran and that the Messenger would not forget it. The Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to rush to repeat the revelation as Gabriel delivered it to him. Allah therefore said to him:
﴾Do not move your tongue with it in haste. It is for Us to collect it and recite it. So when We recite it, follow its recitation. Then it is for Us to explain it﴿ [al-Qiyāmah: 16–19].
Thereafter, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace, would listen silently until Gabriel finished reciting the revelation, and then he would recite it. Here He says, ﴾We shall make you recite, and you will not forget, except what Allah wills﴿, meaning: except what He wills you to forget, for all matters are in His hand—Mighty and Majestic is He.
﴾Allah erases whatever He wills and establishes whatever He wills﴿ [al-Ra'd: 39].
﴾Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things? Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that besides Allah you have neither protector nor helper?﴿ [al-Baqarah: 106, 107].
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would sometimes be caused to forget a verse from the Book of Allah, but he would soon remember it, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. As for His words, ﴾Indeed, He knows what is spoken openly﴿, they mean that Allah Most High knows what is spoken openly. What is spoken openly is:
