of all places to Allah (1). This love pertains to places. Thus, Allah Most High loves and is loved. Hence He says: ﴾And He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Loving.﴿
He then explains His greatness and the perfection of His sovereignty in the words: ﴾Lord of the Throne﴿—that is, Possessor of the Throne. The Throne is that above which Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, rose. It is the greatest, largest, and vastest of created things. It is reported that the seven heavens and the seven earths, in relation to the Footstool, are like a ring cast into a vast expanse of land, and that the Throne’s vastness in relation to the Footstool is like that vast expanse in relation to the ring (2).
A small ring from a coat of mail cast into a vast expanse of land is as nothing in comparison with it. “The Throne’s vastness in relation to the Footstool is like that vast expanse in relation to this ring.” Thus, no one can comprehend its vastness. Even among the created things visible to us today, we observe tremendous disparities in size. A man once showed me an image of the sun and an image of the earth, and I found that the earth, in comparison with the sun, was like a tiny dot upon a broad, immense surface; indeed, it bore no comparison to the sun whatsoever.
If this is so of visible things perceived through telescopes and other means, then what must be the case with things hidden from us? What is hidden from us is greater than what we observe. Allah Most High says: ﴾You have been given only a little knowledge.﴿ [al-Isrāʾ: 85].
In short, the Throne is the roof of all created things—an immense Throne above which the Most Merciful, Glorious and Exalted is He, rose—as Allah Most High says: ﴾The Most Merciful rose above the Throne.﴿ [Tā Hā: 5]. And His words:
