, as in the Messenger’s words—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—on the day of Khaybar: “Tomorrow, I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.” The people spent the night and then went to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the following morning, each hoping that it would be given to him. He asked, “Where is Ali ibn Abī Tālib?” They replied, “He is suffering from pain in his eyes.” He sent for him, and when he arrived, he spat into his eye, whereupon it healed immediately as though he had never suffered any pain. He then gave him the banner and said, “Proceed steadily until you reach their territory, then invite them to Islam.” (1)
The relevant point is his statement, (“He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him”). This affirms that Allah loves this particular man, Ali ibn Abī Tālib. Likewise, when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent a man at the head of a military detachment, the man would lead them in prayer and conclude his recitation with, ﴾Say: He is Allah, the One.﴿ When they returned to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—they informed him of this, since his practice of concluding the recitation with ﴾Say: He is Allah, the One﴿ was unfamiliar. He said, “Ask him what made him do that.” They asked him, and he replied, “It describes Allah, and I love to recite it.”
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “Tell him that Allah loves him.” (2) Here, Allah’s love is attached to a particular individual whom He loves. Allah’s love may also pertain to people designated by their attributes, as in: ﴾Indeed, Allah loves the God-fearing﴿; ﴾Indeed, Allah loves those who do good﴿; and ﴾Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in ranks, as though they were a solid structure.﴿ [al-Saff: 4]. These do not refer to one particular person, but to anyone characterized by a given quality.
Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, also loves places: “The places most beloved to Allah are their mosques.” (3) The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also stated that Mecca is the most beloved—
