Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

to those who drink it—and rivers of purified honey.﴾ [Muhammad: 15].

﴿That is the great triumph.﴾ “That” refers to the gardens and the bliss they contain. ﴿The great triumph﴾ means deliverance from everything feared and attainment of everything desired, for triumph consists in attaining what is desired and being spared what is disliked. Such is Paradise: it contains everything desired, while everything feared has been removed from it. They will taste neither death, disease, sickness, anxiety, nor fatigue therein.

Allah then says: ﴿Indeed, your Lord’s seizure is severe.﴾ ﴿Seizure﴾ means His taking people to task through punishment, while “severe” means powerful, as Allah Most High says: ﴿Know that Allah is severe in punishment and that Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.﴾ (al-Mā’idah: 98). Allah’s seizure thus means His retribution. His taking to task is severe and tremendous, but it befalls those who deserve it. As for those who do not deserve it, Allah Most High treats them with His all-encompassing mercy. How many sins Allah pardons, how many faults He conceals, how many afflictions He wards off, and how many blessings He bestows! Yet when He seizes a wrongdoer, He does not let him escape. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Allah grants the wrongdoer respite, but when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.” He then recited the words of Allah Most High: ﴿Such is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.﴾ (1)
﴿Hūd: 102﴾.

Accordingly, we say that ﴿your Lord’s seizure﴾ applies to those who deserve to be seized. As for those who do not, Allah Most High treats them with mercy, generosity, and munificence. Allah Most High’s mercy has preceded His wrath.

﴿Indeed, it is He who originates and restores.﴾ ﴿al-Rūm: 27﴾ This means that the beginning and the return of all things belong to Him. It is like the words of Allah Most High: ﴿He is the One who originates creation and then restores it.﴾ He is the One who brought all things into being, and to Him all things ultimately return. Everything originates with Him and returns to Him in every respect: creation is from Allah and returns to Him; the revealed laws are from Allah and return to Him; and all affairs are from Allah and return to Him. That is why He says:
