Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

“Worship” also entails doing everything Allah has commanded and refraining from everything He has forbidden. Whoever does not do so is not truly a worshipper: if he fails to do what is commanded, he is not truly worshipping; and if he fails to refrain from what is forbidden, he is not truly worshipping. A servant is one who conforms to what the One worshipped wills according to His revealed law. Worship therefore requires a person to fulfill everything he has been commanded to do and refrain from everything he has been forbidden to do. He cannot accomplish this without Allah’s aid. Hence Allah Most High says, ﴿You alone we ask for help﴾—meaning: We ask none but You to help us in worship and in all other matters. “Seeking help” means requesting aid. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, pairs worship with seeking help—or with reliance upon Him—in several places in the Quran, because worship cannot be performed in the most perfect manner without Allah’s aid, entrusting one’s affairs to Him, and relying upon Him.

Lessons:

1 — One lesson from the verse is that worship must be devoted exclusively to Allah, based on His words, ﴿You alone we worship﴾. This exclusivity is conveyed by placing the object before the verb.

2 — Another is that help must be sought exclusively from Allah, Glorious and Exalted, based on His words, ﴿You alone we ask for help﴾, where the object is placed first.

If someone asks, “How can it be said that help must be sought exclusively from Allah when the words of Allah Most High, ﴿Cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety﴾ [al-Mā’idah: 2], affirm that help may be received from someone other than Allah, Glorious and Exalted? The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) also said, ‘Helping a man with his mount—by lifting him onto it or hoisting his belongings onto it—is an act of charity’ (1).”

The answer is that seeking help is of two kinds. The first is help sought through complete reliance: you rely upon Allah, Glorious and Exalted, and disclaim any power or strength of your own. This is exclusive to Allah
