Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

but the hypocrites do not know﴾ [Al-Munāfiqūn: 8].

His name “the Praiseworthy” means the One who is praised. Allah—Glorious and Exalted is He—is praised in every circumstance. It was the practice of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—that when something pleasing came to him, he would say, “Praise be to Allah, by whose grace righteous deeds are brought to completion.” When something contrary to that came to him, he would say, “Praise be to Allah in every circumstance.” (1) This is what a person should say when something unpleasant befalls him: “Praise be to Allah in every circumstance.”

As for the expression used by some people, “Praise be to Allah, who alone is praised for what is disliked,” it is contrary to what has come in the Sunnah. Say what the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Praise be to Allah in every circumstance.” By saying, “Who alone is praised for what is disliked,” it is as though you are openly declaring that you dislike what Allah has decreed for you. This is not proper. Rather, a person must patiently endure whatever Allah has decreed for him, whether it distresses or pleases him. For the One who decreed it is Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—your Lord, and you are His servant; He is your Master, and you belong to Him.

Thus, when Allah decrees for you something you dislike, do not become distraught. You must remain patient and refrain from showing displeasure, whether in your heart, with your tongue, or through your limbs. Be patient and endure, for the matter will pass, and no condition lasts forever. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Know that victory comes with patience, relief with distress, and ease with hardship.” (2)

Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—is therefore praised in every circumstance, whether prosperity or adversity. If He decrees prosperity, it is itself a trial and a test. Allah Most High says: ﴿We test you with evil and good as a trial﴾ [Al-Anbiyāʾ: 35]. When Solomon saw the throne of Bilqīs before him, he said: ﴿This is from the bounty of my Lord, that He may test me as to whether I am grateful﴾ [Al-Naml: 40].

Thus, when you are granted a blessing, do not regard it merely as a blessing and become exultant and jubilant. It is undoubtedly a blessing, but know that through it you are being tested as to whether
