today.” (1) There is no doubt that this is an easy reckoning, in which Allah’s gracious favor toward His servant is made manifest, as are the servant’s joy and gladness at it. The One who calls him to account is Allah, Glorified and Exalted, as He Most High says:
“Indeed, to Us is their return. Then surely upon Us is their reckoning” [al-Ghāshiya: 25–26].
“And he will return to his family joyful.” He will return from the reckoning to his family in Paradise, joyful—that is, joyful at heart. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed us that the first group to enter Paradise will resemble the moon on the night it is full (2). Thereafter, they will be of varying ranks. This indicates the joy within their hearts, for when the heart is filled with joy, the face becomes radiant.
“But as for the one who is given his record from behind his back, he will cry out for destruction and burn in a blazing Fire.” These are the wretched—Allah’s refuge is sought. He will be given his record from behind his back, not in his right hand. In another verse, in Sūrat al-Hāqqa, Allah says, “But as for the one who is given his record in his left hand” [al-Hāqqa: 25]. It has therefore been said that those who are not given their records in their right hands fall into two groups: some are given their records in their left hands, while others are given them from behind their backs.
The more likely view—and Allah knows best—is that the person is given his record in his left hand, but his arm is twisted around behind his back. This signifies that he cast the Book of Allah behind his back. Thus, he takes the record in his left hand, after which his arm is twisted backward, signifying that he turned his back on the Book of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, cared nothing for it, paid it no heed, and saw no harm in opposing it.
“He will cry out for destruction”—that is, he will invoke destruction upon himself, crying, “O my destruction! Woe is me!” and uttering similar words of regret and anguish. But this will be of no avail on that Day, for the time for deeds will have ended. The time for deeds is in this world; in the Hereafter there will be no deeds, only recompense.
“And he will burn in a blazing Fire”—that is, he will burn in the Fire which
