136 – They unanimously agree that only one pilgrimage is required in a person’s lifetime—the Hajj of Islam—unless he has made a vow, in which case he must fulfill it.

139 – They unanimously agree that one may enter ihram without performing a ritual bath.

140 – They unanimously agree that the bath for ihram is not mandatory; the only ones who held otherwise were al-Hasan al-Basri and ‘Ata’ (2).

142 – They unanimously agree that whoever enters ihram during the months of Hajj, intending it to be the obligatory Hajj of Islam, his pilgrimage suffices for that obligation.

143 – They unanimously agree that the pilgrim in ihram is prohibited from sexual intercourse, hunting game, applying perfume, certain types of clothing, cutting hair, and trimming the nails.

144 – They unanimously agree that the person in ihram is barred from these things while in that state, except for cupping, which is permitted.

145 – They unanimously agree that whoever intentionally has sexual intercourse during his Hajj before standing at ʿArafah incurs

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (no. 1524) and by Muslim (no. 1181) from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, who said: “The Prophet fixed the miqat for the people of Madina at Dhu al-Hulayfa, for the people of al-Sham at al-Juhfa, for the people of Najd at Qarn al-Manazil, and for the people of Yemen at Yalamlam. These stations apply to the inhabitants of those regions and to anyone who passes by them intending hajj or umra. Whoever lives nearer than these points enters ihram from his own place of departure, and even the people of Makka do so from inside Makka.” (2) See al-Majmuʿ, 7/221. Ibn Abi Shayba also transmitted (4/524) from al-Hasan: “If the pilgrim in ihram wishes, he may bathe, and if he wishes, he may refrain.” The isnad is extremely weak, for it contains Ismail b. Muslim al-Makki, who is discarded by the critics. (3) (5/b).
