Mas'ala fi Tawhid al-FalasifaIbn Taimiya

For this reason it is said: “The first stirrings of thought are the last stage of action, and the earliest yearning is the final attainment.” Thought refers to the conception by which the object is pictured, while yearning denotes will and purposeful intent—this is plain. They also remark: “The final cause is an efficient cause for the efficient cause; through it the agent becomes an agent.” In truth, it is by means of that end that his agency is completed, not that the end by itself constitutes the cause of his being an agent. They further say that the final cause is prior in essence yet posterior in actual existence; but it has no concrete essence before the thing exists. Its precedence lies only in essence and in the kind of existence it possesses in knowledge and intention, not in the external world.

We have already expanded on this subject, exposing their inconsistencies and showing how their claim that He acts by necessity of His own essence is invalid, for they themselves speak of the ends He intends in His acts—thereby refuting their denial of the attributes. What matters here is simply that calling the intended wisdom of an act a “cause” is a recognized convention among them and other speculative thinkers. Likewise, applying the word “cause” to a factor devoid of perception and intent is another accepted usage. As for using the term “cause” for the agent who possesses knowledge and will—the one who adds the final cause—this is a point over which they dispute. Even if it is said that the disagreement is merely verbal, the aim is to identify the overlap that arises in these terms because of differing conventions and the like, so that the sources of error generated thereby may be laid bare.

The same applies when the word “cause” is used for the matter, or for the substratum that is a substance, or for what they call a “form” that inheres in it as an accident, whether that form be a product of craftsmanship or of nature—as when they say that silver is the matter, while the ring, the coin, and the like are forms imposed upon it.
