namely, the spatially extended substance; and spatial extension is not the cause of the substance that is extended. In general, every attribute that necessarily accompanies its subject is indeed inseparable from it, yet it is not the cause of that subject’s existence. How, then, can it be claimed that an essence whose existence necessarily follows from it must itself be the cause of that existence? Rather, the existence that is both necessary and obligatory is simply concomitant with the essence; it is not something that comes afterward. The essence is a condition for that existence just as that existence is a condition for the essence; the one cannot be realized without the other, nor the other without the one.

A condition, however, is not required to precede what it conditions, nor is it bound by the constraints that govern efficient causes. Indeed, it is perfectly admissible for each of two things to be a condition for the other, whereas it is impossible for each of two things to be the efficient cause of the other, for that would entail a vicious circle of antecedent causation—an impossibility. In the realm of conditions it entails only simultaneous circularity, which is not impossible. Hence there is no contradiction in saying that each of the two exists only together with the other, whereas it is impossible that each should exist only after the other. Numerous parallel cases confirm this point.

As for their assertion in the second division—that what differentiates the two is merely a concomitant of what they share—we have already refuted it, for one single nature cannot be attended by diverse concomitants. We therefore reply: You have classified the first two as existence and necessity, and the other as essence, and you have declared that they agree in necessary existence while differing in essence, or the reverse.

We say: If it is maintained that the essence is concomitant with necessary existence, there is no objection, because necessary existence may obtain either absolutely or in a particular instance. Should necessary existence be taken in its absolute sense—the element shared by both, that single universal nature—
