the mind, then the two items that coincide may, in such cases, each stand as both consequent and antecedent for the other, and as both accident and substratum for the other. But if by “coincide” you mean the conjunction of what is in the mind with what is outside it, the mental representation never meets the external reality; therefore it can neither be consequent to it nor antecedent for it, neither its accident nor its substratum. For what is in the mind is an accident inhering in the human soul, whereas what is outside is a self-subsisting substance that may very well exist without our knowing it, just as we may conceive in ourselves something that has never existed externally. Hence neither of the two necessitates the other, nor is it necessitated by it; neither is an accident of the other, nor vice-versa. The entities that exist outside do not inhere in what is in the soul, are not its attributes, and are in no way connected to it; nor does the knowledge that is in the mind inhere in the external entities, serve as one of their attributes, or subsist in them. In fact, it never leaves its own locus, for an accident that inheres in a subject cannot migrate from that subject to another.

To clarify: when, for example, two human beings share humanity, animality, quiddity, existence, and the like—universals—yet each is distinguished from the other by the particularity of his own existence, quiddity, humanity, animality, and the like—particulars—the element they share, taken as a bare universal, exists only in the mind, while the particulars exist in external reality. This external particular is neither consequent to that mental universal nor antecedent for it, neither its accident nor its substratum. Rather, the relation between them is like that of knowledge and the thing known: the cognitive image is analogous to the universal, and the externally existing entities are the objects known. One may know something that does not exist, and something may exist without being known. The knowledge residing in the knower never passes over to the object known, which remains in its external locus; nor is either of them an accident of the other.

If someone objects, “The genus is inseparable from the species, for the genus is universal and the species are likewise universals,”
