kill anyone except those who fight us.
2. We do not kill them merely because of their unbelief; hence we do not kill non-combatants—women, children, the elderly, monks, the chronically ill, the insane, those secluded in hermitages, hired workers, farmers, and the like—anyone who has not taken up arms against us.
3. If the unbelievers from among the polytheists and idol-worshippers leave the Muslims alone, refrain from fighting them, and agree to pay the jizyah with their own hands while humbled, there is no reason to kill or fight them.
4. The ruling for fighting polytheists who worship idols is the same as that for the People of the Book: should they block the establishment and spread of Allah’s religion in their lands, or refuse to pay the jizyah to the Muslims, they are to be fought. In this passage the Shaykh therefore supports the majority view that it is permissible to take the jizyah from polytheists and that it is not limited to the People of the Book or those with a quasi-scripture such as the Magians.

Those who repudiate the attribution of this abridged treatise have based their denial—in its entirety—on one of two premises, or on both together:
