while others denied certain portions and affirmed others (1).
The scholarly way to cure this confusion is to examine and collate everything the Shaykh wrote in his various works, so that his intent in the excerpt dealing with fighting the unbelievers becomes crystal-clear—especially since what is currently in circulation is only an abridgment of Ibn Taymiyyah’s original composition, not the full text.
After tracing and surveying the Shaykh’s statements on this question throughout his printed writings, I can state briefly that, in the passage quoted from him, he meant to explain the following:
- That when we fight the unbelievers among the People of the Book, the Magians, and the polytheists, we do not

وبعضهم الآخر: نفى بعضها، وأثبت بعضها الآخر (١).
وعلاج هذا الإشكال - من خلال منظور البحث العلمي - إنما يكون بالاستقراء والتتبع لما كتبه الشيخ في مصنفاته، ليتضح بجلاء مراده من هذا الفصل المنقول عنه في قتال الكفار؛ خصوصًا أن الموجود إنما هو المختصر من تأليفه شيخ الإسلام لا الأصل.
لذا أستطيع بعد تتبعي واستقرائي لكلام شيخ الإسلام حول هذه المسألة من كتبه المطبوعة، القول باختصار: إن شيخ الإسلام أراد في هذا الموضع المنقول عنه بيان:
١. أننا إذا قاتلنا الكفار من أهل الكتاب والمجوس والمشركين، فلا
