—for instance, in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa (35/223), and likewise in al-Fatawa al-Kubra (4/619). Another example is what the abridger has transmitted from the Shaykh, who said: “I have expanded on what pertains to this in al-Sarim al-Maslul ʿala Shatim al-Rasul,” and this passage is indeed found in al-Sarim; see (3/696, 866).

6. The words and views of Shaykh al-Islam cited in this abridged treatise are in full agreement with his statements elsewhere in his corpus: that fighting the unbelievers is warranted only because of their armed aggression (ḥarāb), not merely because of disbelief; that disbelief alone does not justify killing; that no one is to be put to death except the combatant; that it is permissible to make a truce with the unbelievers, whether open-ended or time-limited; and that the jizya (poll-tax) may be taken from all categories of unbelievers, whether People of the Book or idol-worshippers. All of this is documented in its appropriate locations within this epitome, and I shall present a few illustrative examples:

• First example: Shaykh al-Islam says in the abridged treatise: “Is the motive for fighting the unbelievers their actual hostility, or is it mere disbelief? On this issue there are two opinions…"
