with funds from Bahrain is well attested in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections (1). And what could possibly make ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf better informed about this than the rest of the Emigrants and Helpers, many of whom knew the matter far better than he did—men like Abū ʿUbaydah, who was the very one that brought the jizya, and the Helpers who went out to greet him when they heard that the money had arrived? This is a topic that could be treated in far greater detail.
Yet a person may forget (2) something that actually happened to him, just as ʿUmar forgot what had occurred between him and ʿAmmār regarding tayammum (dry ablution) (3). One may even become oblivious to a verse of the Quran until he is reminded of it.

مَعْرُوفٌ فِي الصَّحِيحَينِ (١)، وَمَا الَّذِي جَعَلَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ [بنَ عَوفٍ] أَعْلَمَ بِهَذَا مِنْ سَائِرِ المُهَاجِرِينَ وَالأَنصَارِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا أَعْلَم بِهَذَا مِنْهُ؟ مِثْل أَبِي عُبَيدَة الَّذِي هُوَ قَدِمَ بِالجِزْيَة، وَالأَنْصَارِ الَّذِين وَافَوهُ لمَّا سَمِعُوا بِقُدُومِ المَالِ، وَهَذَا يَحْتَمِلُ بَسْطًا كَثِيرًا.
وَلَكِنَّ الإِنْسَانَ قَدْ يَنْسَى (٢) مَا وَقَعَ لَهُ، كَمَا نَسِيَ عُمَرُ مَا جَرَى لَهُ وَلعَمَّارٍ فِي التَّيَمُّمِ (٣)، وَقَدْ يَذْهَلُ عَنِ الآَيَةِ مِنَ القُرْآن، حَتَّى يُذَكَّرَ
