—compelling it to do what it has been commanded, to abstain from what it has been forbidden, and to fight it for Allah’s sake—he will never be able to confront the enemy outside.”

True striving is that the servant strives against his own self, so that his heart, tongue, and limbs surrender entirely to Allah; and that he strives against his devil by denying his promises, disobeying his orders, and committing the very deeds he forbids. From these two kinds of striving there arises a strength, an authority, and an arsenal by which he can then strive against the enemies of Allah outwardly—with his heart, his tongue, his hand, and his wealth—so that the word of Allah may be supreme.”
