Then, once they had tampered with that scripture, their earlier state of idolatry brought them no benefit. None of the Companions or the Successors are known to have regarded Zaradasht as a genuine prophet; on the contrary, the well-known judgment is that he was among the liars. (1) Allah, exalted is He, has said: “lest you say, ‘The Scripture was sent down only to two communities before us…’ ”
(1) Al-‘Ayni reports in ‘Umdat al-Qari, 19/235: “In the book Tabaqat by Sa‘id it is stated that, at the outset, the Persians were monotheists on the religion of Nuh (Noah). This continued until Bardasaf al-Mashriqi brought to Tahmuras, the third Persian king, the doctrine of the hanifa (i.e., the Sabians). Tahmuras accepted it and forced the Persians to adopt it, so they adhered to it collectively for about 1,200 years. They then turned to Magianism with the appearance of Zaradusht (Zoroaster) in the reign of Bustasaf, king of the Persians, thirty years into his rule. Zaradusht called to the Magian faith—veneration of fire and other lights, the view that the cosmos is composed of light and darkness, and belief in five eternal beings: Iblis, prime matter, time, space, and another he named. Bustasaf accepted this creed and fought for it until the Persians unanimously followed it, abandoning Sabianism and accepting Zaradusht as a prophet sent to them. They remained on his religion for nearly 1,300 years, until Allah abolished their kingdom at the hands of ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.”
ثُمَّ لمَّا بَدَّلُوهَا لَمْ يَنْفَعْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا عَلَيهِ قَبْلُ مِنَ الشِّرْك، وَلَمْ يُعْرَفْ عَنْ أَحَدٍ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ وَالتَّابِعِينَ أَنَّهُمْ جَعَلُوا زَرَادِشْت نَبِيًّا صَادِقًا، بَلِ المَشْهُور عَنْهُ: أَنَّهُ مِنَ الكَذَّابِينَ (١)، وَقَدْ قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿أَنْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابُ عَلَى طَائِفَتَينِ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا﴾.
(١) قال العيني في عمدة القاري (١٩/ ٢٣٥): (وفي كتاب "الطبقات" لصاعد كانت الفرس أول أمرها موحدة على دين نوح ﵊ إلى أن أتى برداسف المشرقي إلى طهمورس ثالث ملوك الفرس بمذهب الحنفاء، وهم الصابئون، فقبله منه وقسر الفرس على التشرع به، فاعتقدوه جميعًا نحو ألف سنة ومائتي سنة إلى أن تمجسوا جميعًا بظهور زرادشت في زمن بستاسف ملك الفرس حين مضى من ملكه ثلاثون سنة، ودعى إلى دين المجوسية من تعظيم النار وسائر الأنوار، والقول بتركيب العالم من النور والظلام، واعتقاد القدماء الخمسة: إبليس والهيولى والزمان والمكان وذكر آخر، فقبل منه بستاسف، وقاتل الفرس عليه حتى انقادوا جميعًا إليه، ورفضوا دين الصابئة، واعتقدوا زرادشت نبيًّا مرسلًا إليهم، ولم يزالوا على دينه قريبًا من ألف سنة وثلاث مائة سنة إلى أن أباد الله ﷿ ملكهم على يد عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه).
