and the Magians (Zoroastrians) commit a form of polytheism even graver than that of the Christians. For this reason Mani—after whom the Manichaeans are named—devised a new, syncretic religion that fused the Magian creed with Christian doctrine. From the Magians he adopted the two fundamental principles of light and darkness, then mingled them with the teachings of the Christians, so that Manichaeism proved more unbelieving than Christianity itself. As for the Arabs, their polytheism consisted in worshipping idols (1).

It is authentically established in the Sahih, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas and others, that the idols of Noah’s people eventually passed down to them; they were Wadd, Suwaʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq,

= The wisdom of the Lawgiver—peace and blessings be upon him—in forbidding prayer at those specific times is to block any possible means to wrongdoing. The same explanation appears in the earlier passage (1/334) and likewise in the Fatawa and other works. (1) Shaykh al-Islam states in Al-Jawab al-Sahih (2/111): “There is no doubt that this idea was transmitted to the Christians from the Magians; hence, they cannot quote it from any revealed scripture or from any of the disciples. This is why the Manichaeans fashioned their religion as a blend of Christian and Magian beliefs, and their founder Mani was both a Christian and a Magian. The link between Christians and Magians—indeed between them and all other polytheists—is well established.”
