Many misguided people who claim to belong to Islam have fallen into something of the same, imitating the Christians. They began to face the east in prayer, turning their prostration toward the quarter of the sun and the moon instead of (2) prostrating to them outright. How far this is from the Prophet’s ﷺ prohibition of praying at the time of sunrise and at the time of—
(1) The margin of the printed edition reads: “Perhaps the Shaykh never entered Christian churches; had he done so, he would have found in them sacred statues and worshiped idols just like those found elsewhere.” I would add that he makes the same point in al-Radd ala al-Mantiquiyyin, 1:290, where he writes: “The ancient Greeks and Romans fashioned three-dimensional idols that cast a shadow, whereas the Christians adopted painted images on walls and ceilings that cast no shadow.” The same idea recurs in al-Jawab al-Sahih, 1:346.
(2) The manuscript has “la min,” but the reading adopted here seems more accurate; compare al-Jawab al-Sahih, 1:346, and Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 17:331.
