Consequently, a number of Christians—and others besides—embraced Islam. Yet the Christians of Syria then set upon them, killing some of their leading figures who had accepted the faith at Maʿan. (1) In other words, the Christians were the first to take up arms against the Muslims, slaying those who had embraced Islam out of sheer aggression and injustice, whereas the Prophet’s envoys had been sent only to invite people to Islam of their own free choice.
“…and he reports further that Khalid ibn al-Walid seized the banner and that God granted victory at his hands.” He adds in the same section (2/60): “When the Prophet returned from Hudaybiyyah, he sent envoys to the peoples of the world: to the Arab rulers in Yemen, the Hijaz, Syria and Iraq; to the Christian rulers in Syria and Egypt—Copts, Byzantines, Arabs and others; and to the Persians and the Magians, the rulers of the Turak and Khurasan.”
(1) Furwah ibn Amr al-Nafiri al-Judhami, later called al-Nufathi, sent a messenger to the Messenger of Allah announcing his acceptance of Islam and presented him with a white mule. Furwah served as the Byzantine governor over the Arab tribes bordering them and lived in Maʿan and the surrounding region of greater Syria. When the Byzantines learned of his conversion, they pursued and captured him, imprisoned him, and ultimately executed him. See: Tarikh Dimashq 48/270; al-Bidayah wa’l-Nihayah 5/86; al-Isabah 5/386.
