Eighth Proof for the Prohibition of Fighting Those Disbelievers Who Do Not Fight
Then he said: “As for the Christians, he had not fought any of them up to that point; rather, after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah he dispatched envoys to every ruler, inviting them to Islam. He sent letters to Caesar, to Chosroes, to al-Muqawqis, to the Negus, and to the Arab kings of the East and of Syria.” (1)
Concerning the people of the earth, he would fight anyone who fought him until they either entered his religion, concluded a truce with him, or submitted to his authority by paying the jizya (tribute tax). This is the instruction he gave to his detachments and armies whenever they confronted their enemies … and this course is more pleasing to Allah than killing them.
(1) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya, al-Jawab al-Sahih, vol. 1, pp. 269–300: “After the year of al-Hudaybiyya and the truce with Quraysh, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent envoys to all communities. He dispatched messengers to the Christians of Syria and Egypt and sent one to Heraclius, the emperor of Byzantium … He also sent an envoy to al-Muqawqis, the ruler of the Egyptian Christians in Alexandria at that time … Once the letters had been delivered to the kings, the Prophet ﷺ began campaigning against the Christians. He first dispatched Zayd ibn Haritha, Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib, and Abdullah ibn Rawaha at the head of an army; they fought the Christians at Muʾta … all three were killed, and the Prophet ﷺ informed the people of their deaths on the very day they fell.”
