—the Anṣār pleaded, “Messenger of Allah, they are our children!” Thereupon this verse was revealed. (1)
He also cited al-Shaʿbī, Mujāhid, and others who narrated similar reports.
(1) Shaykh al-Islam mentions this report in his Fatawa, 35:224, and again in al-Fatawa al-kubra, 2:188, where he writes: “It is reliably established that a number of the Ansar’s children adopted Judaism shortly before the Prophet’s mission, as Ibn Abbas relates. God then revealed: la ikrah fi d-din, qad tabayyana ar-rushd mina al-ghayy (There is no compulsion in religion; right guidance has become distinct from error). Hence we know that these children’s fathers were still alive when they themselves entered Judaism—this took place after the mission of Jesus, peace be upon him, and after the Torah had been abrogated and altered. Even so, God forbade compelling those who had adopted Judaism after that abrogation and alteration to embrace Islam, and He allowed them to remain upon payment of the jizya.”
