— the word “sword” is a collective designation for every verse that contains a command to wage jihad. Consequently, this verse is a “sword,” and so are the others; where, then, is the abrogating text? (1) If, on the other hand, what is meant by “the Verse of the Sword” is His statement in Sūrah Barāʾah: “When the sacred months have passed, then slay the polytheists wherever you find them,” that passage does not contradict the present one, for the former is unrestricted—while the polytheist has situations in which it is not permissible
(1) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya writes in Al-Jawab al-Sahih, 1/232: “When someone claims that the verse about disputing with the unbelievers, or any other verse he says has been abrogated, is annulled by ayat al-sayf (‘the verse of the sword’), we ask him: What exactly do you mean by ‘the verse of the sword’? Do you intend one specific verse, or every verse that commands jihad? If he means the first, the reply is twofold: first, the passages that mention jihad are many, so it is impermissible to single out only some of them….”
He likewise states in Al-Fatawa, 2/32: “Many exegetes, when they come across verses they think forbid fighting, say that these are abrogated by the verse of the sword.” The same idea appears in As-Safadiyya, 2/320.
He further comments in Al-Fatawa, 8/325: “Some commentators say, ‘This verse is abrogated by the verse of the sword.’ Such a claim is valid only if the verse actually prohibits fighting, in which case that specific prohibition would indeed be abrogated; not every form of patience has been annulled. Besides, the verse in question here does not even address that point—neither by negation nor by affirmation!”
