and Abu al-Maʿālī. (1)
Yet these scholars contradict themselves, for they allow abrogation before the time for implementation arrives, whereas specification (takhsīṣ) never involves abolishing the whole purport of the revelation. (2)
Another group applied their principle consistently—such as Abu al-Hasan al-Jazarī of the Hanbalis and others—for these sided with the Muʿtazilah in prohibiting abrogation before one is able to act on the command, and before

(1) Shaykh al-Islam states in Al-Fatawa 14:146: “The Muʿtazila deny the wisdom that is inherent in the very act of commanding; for that reason they do not allow naskh (abrogation) before the servant becomes able to carry out the command. A number of the companions of Ahmad—as well as others such as Abu al-Hasan al-Tamimi—agreed with them on this point.” See also Al-Fatawa 19:290. (2) Shaykh al-Islam states in Al-Fatawa 17:198: “The Muʿtazila al-Qadariyya hold that God cannot command or forbid on the basis of a wisdom that arises from the command itself; consequently they rejected the permissibility of naskh before one is able to perform the act of worship, as in the story of the intended sacrifice and in the reduction of the fifty prayers imposed on the night of the Miʿraj to five. A group of Ahl al-Sunnah who affirm qadar (predestination) followed them in prohibiting abrogation before the time of the act, imagining that there must always be a wisdom inherent in whatever is commanded or forbidden and that therefore He could not forbid the very thing He had commanded. This resembles the view of those who call abrogation a temporal specification, since a specification does not annul the entire meaning of the wording—but they thereby fell into inconsistency.”
