Manāsik al-ḤajjIbn Taimiya

from the Lower Thaniyyah (1), entered the Mosque through the Gate of Banu Shaybah (2), and, at the time of the Farewell (3), departed through the Hazwarah Gate (4) known today (5). He made his way to ʿArafāt by the Dabb road and returned by the al-Maʾzimayn route (6), and he proceeded to the Jamrah (7)

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, 1575, and Muslim, 1257, on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both. (2) Ibn ʿUthaymin states in Sharh al-Mumtiʿ 7/229: “The Gate of Bani Shaybah has now vanished; no physical trace remains. We did, however, see a curved stone arch near the Maqam Ibrahim that is said to mark its site. Anyone entering from Bab al-Salam and heading toward the Kaʿba would pass through this gate.” (3) Copies C and D read: “baʿd” (after). (4) The manuscripts have “Harura,” but the correct reading is “Hazwara.” Muʿjam al-Buldan 2/255 explains: “Hazwara—with an initial ḥa, followed by a silent zay, an open waw, a ra and a final ta—is, in Arabic, a small rise of ground; its plural is hazawir. Al-Darqutni affirms this spelling, whereas some hadith scholars vocalise the zay and double the waw, which is erroneous. Hazwara was Mecca’s market and was incorporated into the Mosque when it was enlarged.” Marasid al-Ittilaʿ 1/400 adds: “Bab al-Hazwara is a well-known gate of the Sacred Mosque; common people pronounce it Bab ʿAzwara with an ʿayn.” (5) Ibn Khuzaymah (2700) transmits from Ibn ʿAbbas: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca under the Quraysh pact, he came through this principal gate,” a report graded sound by al-Albani. Al-Tabarani records in al-Awsat (491) from Ibn ʿUmar: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered—and we with him—through the Gate of Bani ʿAbd Manaf, which people call the Gate of Bani Shaybah; we then left for Madinah through Bab al-Hazwara, the Gate of the Tailors.” Ibn Hajar comments in al-Talkhis 2/464: “Its chain contains ʿAbd Allah ibn Nafiʿ, who is weak.” (6) The bracketed passage is absent from copy B. (7) The word “ila” (to) is omitted in copy B.
