the gravest sins—save for what was seen on the Day of Badr, when he saw Gabriel (1) marshaling the angels (2).

The standing (wuqūf) is valid for a woman who is menstruating just as it is for one who is not. One may perform the standing while mounted or on foot (3); which of the two is superior differs from person to person (4). If, by remaining mounted, the people can see him and benefit from his presence (5), or if dismounting would be difficult for him, then he should stand while mounted, for the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—performed the standing mounted (6).

The same applies to the pilgrimage in general: for some people, performing it while mounted is the better option

(1) In manuscript B the reading is “nazaʿ.” Al-Tamhid 1/116 comments on the expression yazaʿ al-malaʾikah: linguists define yazaʿ as “to restrain and prevent,” but here it means “to muster and line them up for battle,” which still involves restraint, for it stops them from speaking over one another or breaking ranks. (2) Reported by Malik in the Muwattaʾ 1/422 through Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn Kurayz. Shaykh al-Islam notes in Sharh al-ʿUmda 5/235 that its chain is mursal. (3) The wording appears in manuscripts J and D as “walking and riding” instead of “riding and walking.” (4) According to the Hanbali school, riding is preferable; see al-Furuʿ 6/49, Ikhtiyarat al-Baʿli p. 175, and al-Insaf 4/29. (5) Manuscript B reads: “fa-hajatuhum.” (6) The clause “for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood while riding” is missing from manuscripts A and B.
