The sunnah is for the pilgrim to spend the night in Mina, praying there (1) Dhuhr, ʿAsr, Maghrib, ʿIshaʾ, and Fajr, and not leaving until the sun has risen—just as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did. [As for iqād (lighting fires), it is a disliked innovation by the unanimous agreement of the scholars (2)] (3); lighting fires is confined to Muzdalifah alone (4) after returning from ʿArafah, whereas lighting them at ʿArafah
(1) The word “biha” is lacking in manuscripts J and D.
(2) This refers to lighting fires. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah states in Sharh al-Umdah, 5 / 228: “Most people in our time have abandoned many of these sunnahs: they reach ‘Arafah from early morning—some even enter it at night, spend the night there, and kindle fires. This is an innovation and opposes the sunnah. They also omit going to Namirah and stopping there.” He likewise writes in al-Baʿith ʿala Inkar al-Bidaʿ wa-l-Hawadith, p. 94: “Among the innovations is lighting fires on the night of ‘Arafah, and their concern to bring candles from their homelands. Men and women then mingle while ascending and descending, carrying numerous burning candles; a woman may elbow her way with her lighted candle, her face uncovered. This is a deviation in which they imitate the polytheists at that august station. It appeared only recently, after the passing of the senior scholars who used to command right and forbid wrong, and after people abandoned the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah—namely, to reach ‘Arafah only after the sun has passed the meridian on the Day of ‘Arafah, for the Prophet’s practice is to travel on the eighth day from Mecca to Mina, spend the night there, and delay arriving at ‘Arafah until after noon on the ninth.”
(3) The words enclosed in brackets are missing from manuscript A.
(4) The word “khasatan” is absent from manuscript A. He adds: “As for lighting fires, it is a reprehensible innovation by unanimous agreement of the scholars; lighting is sanctioned only at Muzdalifah—”
