Safa and Marwa, which stand on the two flanks (1) of Mecca’s twin hills (2). There he would pronounce the takbir, recite the tahlil, and beseech Allah, Exalted is He. Nowadays two raised platforms (3) have been built over them, so whoever reaches the foot of the structure, his saʿy is valid even if he does not climb onto the platform.
He traverses between Safa (4) [and Marwa seven times, beginning at Safa] (5) and ends at Marwa, so that his final lap concludes at Marwa (6). It is recommended that he hasten in the bed of the valley—from one marker to the next; the two markers (7) are clearly marked there. If, however, he does not hasten in the valley but walks in his usual manner for the entire distance (8) between Safa and Marwa, his saʿy is still valid (9) by unanimous agreement of the scholars, and no (10) penalty is due.
No prayer is prescribed after the saʿy between Safa and Marwa; rather, the prayer is only after the tawaf of the House, in keeping with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the consensus of the early generations and the leading imams.
