even if it is aquatic game such as fish, which people can easily do without—unlike the Sacred Precinct of Mecca, according to the sounder opinion. Rather (1) he must not even scare the game away, as when he drives it off simply to sit in its place.
The same rulings apply to the sanctuary of the Messenger of Allah’s city, namely the area between its two lava fields. A lava field (lābah) is a ḥarrah—land scattered with black volcanic stones. The sanctuary spans one barīd (2) by another barīd; a barīd equals four farsakhs. Its limits run from ʿAir (3) to Thawr. ʿAir is a mountain near the miqāt whose shape resembles that of an ʿair, meaning a donkey, while Thawr is a mountain on the side of Mount Uhud, distinct from the Mount Thawr found in Mecca.
Within this sanctuary as well, its game may not be hunted (4). Its trees are not to be cut except out of necessity, for example to make riding gear or farming implements (5). One may, however, take from its vegetation whatever is needed for fodder (6); for the Prophet ﷺ granted the people of Medina a concession in this matter because of their need for it (7), since there is nothing around them.
