Nor may he cut his hair. He may, however, scratch his body if it itches. He may also have cupping performed on his head or elsewhere (1), and may undergo phlebotomy (2) whenever he needs to do so (3); and if he must shave some hair for that purpose, it is permissible. For it is authentically established in the Ṣaḥīḥ (4) that “the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—had cupping performed in the middle of his head while he was in ihram,” and that cannot be done without shaving some of the hair (5). Likewise, if he performs a ritual bath and some hairs fall out as a result, that does not harm him, even if

The Shafi‘i jurists maintain that oiling is allowed on the rest of the body but forbidden on the head and the beard, whereas the Hanbalis permit oiling so long as the substance is not perfumed. See: al-Mabsut 4/122; al-Sharh al-Kabir by al-Dardir 2/60; al-Majmu‘ 7/279; al-Insaf 3/472. (1) The words “on his head and elsewhere” are absent from MSS A and B. (2) Manuscript B adds: “and he may undergo venesection.” (3) The phrase “and he may have blood let if he needs it” appears in MSS C and D after the clause “once he is certain it has stopped after washing.” (4) Related by al-Bukhari, no. 1836, and Muslim, no. 1203, from the hadith of Abd Allah ibn Buhayna, may Allah be pleased with him. (5) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya said: “If a muhrim needs to cut his hair for cupping or washing, it does not harm him.” The official Hanbali position, however, is that a fidya (compensatory offering) is due; see: al-Furu‘ 5/400; Ikhtiyarat Ibn al-Bali, p. 174; al-Insaf 3/459.
