Among the matters the person in ihram must avoid are: applying perfume after assuming ihram—whether on his body or (1) his clothes; deliberately (2) inhaling (3) fragrance; and, concerning rubbing oil, clarified butter, or similar substances (4) on his head or body when they contain no (5) scent, the jurists hold a well-known difference of opinion (6), so refraining from it is preferable. Nor may he trim his nails.
= Reported by al-Daraqutni, no. 2507. Khuzaima b. Thabit likewise transmits that, when the Prophet had finished his talbiyah, he would ask Allah for His good pleasure and for Paradise and seek refuge, through His mercy, from the Fire; related by al-Shafi‘i (1/123) and al-Daraqutni, no. 2507. The rationale is that the pilgrim who pronounces the talbiyah has answered Allah’s call to visit His House, so Allah reciprocates by answering his supplication, and invoking blessings upon the Prophet is prescribed whenever one makes a supplication.

(4) In ms. B: “wa nahwa dhalik” (and the like).

(6) The Hanafi and Maliki jurists prohibit the use of oil altogether for a muhrim, whether the oil is perfumed or not.
