Nor may a pilgrim in the state of consecration wear anything the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—forbade, except when necessity dictates, just as a fasting person is not permitted to break his fast unless a necessity arises. Such necessity includes, for instance, cold weather that he fears will make him ill if he does not cover his head (1), or an illness that obliges him to keep his head covered. He may then wear only what the need requires; once he no longer needs it, he must remove it.
He is required to offer compensation (2): either by fasting three days, by sacrificing a sheep, or (3) by feeding six needy persons—each person receiving half a saʿ of dates or barley, or one mudd of wheat (4).
If he feeds them bread (5), that is acceptable (6); the amount should be two Iraqi ratls, which is roughly half a Damascene ratl. It should preferably be served with a relish.
