“A woman’s consecration is in her face.”(1) This phrase was voiced only by some of the early scholars,(2) yet the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—prohibited her from wearing a niqab or putting on gloves, just as he forbade the male pilgrim to wear a shirt or leather socks, even though it is unanimously agreed that he may cover his hands(3) and feet.
The burqaʿ(4) provides even more coverage than the niqab; therefore it too is unanimously forbidden. For the same reason, a woman in the state of consecration must not don anything designed specifically to veil the face, such as a burqaʿ or the like, because it is equivalent to the niqab.
= She said: “While we were in a state of ihram with the Messenger of Allah, caravans would ride past us. When they came alongside us, each of us would let her jilbab fall from the top of her head over her face; once they had passed, we uncovered our faces again.” Ibn al-Qattan comments in Bayan al-Wahm wa-l-Iham, 2/391, that “its chain is broken,” whereas al-Albani declares it authentic in his edition of al-Mishkat, no. 2690.
(1) The phrase “qala hadha al-qawl” (he uttered that statement) appears in manuscripts C and D simply as “hadha qawl” (this is a statement).
(2) Al-Darqutni reports the hadith under no. 2761 as marfu (attributed to the Prophet) from Ibn Umar. Al-Bayhaqi, however, transmits it through the same isnad from al-Darqutni as mawquf (a statement of Ibn Umar) under no. 9048, and Ibn Hajar cites it likewise in Ithaf al-Mahara, no. 10844. Al-Bayhaqi states in Maʿrifat al-Sunan, 7/139: “From him it is related that he said, ‘A woman’s ihram is in her face, and a man’s ihram is in his head.’ This is also transmitted from him as marfu, but that elevation is weak.” The mention of the marfu form in some copies of al-Darqutni is therefore most likely a printing or scribal error.
The hadith is also found with a marfu isnad in al-Darqutni, no. 2760, and in al-Bayhaqi, no. 9049, yet al-Darqutni himself judged the correct version to be mawquf.
(3) In manuscript A the reading is “his hand.”
(4) In manuscript D the reading is “and the lightning.”
