any proof that it is forbidden (1), apart from the report transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them both—that he disliked fastening the cloak (2). Those who adopted Ibn ʿUmar’s position have differed (3): some of them (4) hold that this amounts to a non-binding dislike, karāhat tanzīh, as stated by Abū Ḥanīfah and others, while others say it is a prohibitive dislike, karāhat taḥrīm (5).

(1) MSS A and B read: “as prohibited.” (2) Malik, al-Muwattaʾ 1:326, reports from Nafiʿ that ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar disliked a pilgrim’s wearing of the mintaqa (girdle). Ibn Abi Shayba, no. 15438, transmits from Muslim b. Jundub: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say, “Do not fasten anything round yourself while you are in ihram.” (3) The bracketed words are absent from MSS C and D. (4) MS D reads: “from them.” (5) The word “huwa” is missing in B, C and D. (6) MSS C and D add the word “la” (not). (7) Taj al-ʿArus 24:346: “kufiyya: a head-covering, so called because of its circular shape.” (8) MSS C and D add: “nor a qalansuwa nor a kujiya.” Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 36: “qalansuwa (skull-cap) has six accepted pronunciations: qalansuwa, qalsata, qalansaʾa, qalsuwa (all with an open qaf); and qulansiyya, qulnisiyya (with a closed qaf).”
