or he travels to Mecca before the months of Hajj, performs ʿumrah, and stays there until he undertakes Hajj, then performing Hajj alone (ifrad) is best for him by consensus of the four Imams (1).
Entering the state of ihram for Hajj before its months (2) is not part of the Sunnah (3); rather, it is discouraged. If someone nevertheless does so, does he become a pilgrim in ihram for ʿumrah or for Hajj? The scholars differ on this point (4).
– As for the practice followed by most people—that is, combining ʿumrah and Hajj in a single journey and arriving in Mecca during the months of Hajj
…as for hajj: many of the Companions who performed the pilgrimage with the Prophet had already made an earlier ‘umra, yet he nevertheless instructed them to do tamattu‘ and did not tell them to perform ifrad; tamattu‘ brings together two ‘umras, one hajj, and a sacrificial animal, and this is better than a single ‘umra and a hajj.
(1) Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, 26/85: “When a person travels once for hajj and another time for ‘umra, that is superior to qiran and to the specific form of tamattu‘ done in a single journey; this was explicitly stated by Ahmad, Abu Hanifah, Malik, al-Shafi‘i, and others.” Mukhtasar al-Fatawa al-Misriyya, 1/484: “Whoever performs the two rites in two journeys, or who makes ‘umra before the months of hajj and stays on until the pilgrimage, has done what is preferable to tamattu‘. This is the position of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, of Ahmad, and of others, as well as of some followers of Malik, al-Shafi‘i, and others.”
(2) Manuscript A reads: “the months of hajj.”
(3) Manuscripts C and D read: “recommended.”
(4) According to the Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis, assuming ihram for hajj before its prescribed months still counts as hajj, although it is disliked. The Shafi‘is hold that it instead counts as an ‘umra that discharges the obligatory ‘umra of Islam. See: al-Mabsut 4/61; Mawahib al-Jalil 3/18; al-Hawi 4/28; Sharh al-Muntaha 1/527.
