you have amassed, a trade whose downturn you fear, and dwellings you cherish are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His command; for Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient. ⦗at-Tawbah: 24⦘
The Exalted also says:
“Allah and His Messenger have a greater right to be pleased by them, if they are truly believers.” ⦗at-Tawbah: 62⦘
The detailed exposition and commentary on what is contained in this abridgment (1) are set forth elsewhere.
Allah—glorified and exalted—is most knowing. May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon our master and Prophet (2) Muhammad, his family, and his Companions (3).
(1) Manuscript A reads additionally: “and its commentary.”
(2) The phrase sayyiduna wa nabiyyuna (“our master and our Prophet”) is missing from manuscripts A and B; manuscript C retains only sayyiduna (“our master”).
(3) Colophons found in the copies:
– Manuscript A adds: “The blessed book was completed on Thursday, the first day of Jumada al-Thani, in the year 1214 AH, by the needy servant of Allah, Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman Aba Babtain—may Allah forgive him.”
– Manuscript C adds: “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The writing was finished by the fingers of Muhammad al-Makki ibn Azzuz in Istanbul at the close of Ramadan 1327 AH.”
– Manuscript D adds: “All praise belongs to Allah—abundant, pure and blessed praise, as befits the generosity of His Face, the majesty of His splendour and the greatness of His sovereignty, equivalent to the praise offered by all who praise Him and to the number of those who neglect His remembrance. The work was concluded by the pen of the poor, insignificant servant, prodigal in sin, weak, lazy and deficient, who hopes for the pardon of his Gentle, All-Aware Lord: His servant, the son of His servant, the son of His bondwoman, Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Daliqan—may Allah forgive him, his parents, his teachers, and whoever seeks reward for all Muslims, living and deceased. Amin. Completed on 7 Dhu al-Hijjah 1322 AH.”
