He replied, “In that case, Allah will suffice you for two-thirds of your concerns.” (1)
The man said, “Shall I devote my entire supplication to blessings upon you?”
He answered, “Then Allah will take care of everything that troubles you in your worldly life (2) and in the Hereafter.”
It is also narrated in the Sunan that he said:
“Do not turn my grave into a festivity; rather, invoke blessings upon me wherever you may be, for your blessings reach me.” (3)
ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥasan (5)—the senior figure of the Ḥasanids (6) in his time—once saw (4) a man who used to come to the Prophet’s grave to make supplication there. He said (7) to him, “My good man, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
‘Do not turn my grave into a festivity; invoke blessings upon me wherever you may be, for your blessings reach me.’
You and a man in al-Andalus with respect to him (8) are exactly the same (9).”
(1) The words enclosed in brackets are absent from manuscript D.
(2) Manuscripts C and D add the phrase “and he instructed.”
(3) For the full documentation of the report, see p. 138 above.
(4) Manuscript B reads: “narrated.”
(5) Manuscript D reads: “al-Hasan.”
(6) Manuscripts A and B read: “al-Husayn,” while B and C have: “al-Muhsinin.” The most probable wording is “shaykh al-hasaniyyin” (the senior figure among the Hasanids). Ibn Taymiyya states in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 27/383: “In the Sunan of Saʿid ibn Mansur it is reported that ʿAbd Allah ibn Hasan ibn Hasan ibn ʿAli ibn Abi Talib was one of the eminent, indeed the foremost, Hasanid nobles in the generation of the followers of the followers during the caliphate of al-Mansur and afterwards,” and then he relates the incident.
(7) Manuscripts C and D read: “he said.”
(8) The phrase “from him” is omitted in manuscripts C and D.
(9) Ibn Abi Shayba (no. 7542) transmits the story from ʿAli ibn al-Husayn, not from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Hasan.
