It was recorded by Muslim (1), who related the Prophet’s statement: “Had I taken anyone on earth as an intimate friend, I would surely have taken Abū Bakr as an intimate friend (2)” (3). These reports are all found in the sound collections.
As for the practice of certain people (4) who eat dates inside the mosque or hang strands of hair in its lamps, this is a blameworthy innovation.
Whoever carries some Zamzam water with him, that is permissible, for the early generations used to do so (5).
With regard to the ṣayḥānī date (6), it enjoys no particular virtue; other varieties of dates are actually superior;
(1) Sahih Muslim, no. 532, on the authority of Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him).
(2) The word ʿkhalilanʾ (an intimate friend) is missing in manuscript B.
(3) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 466, and Muslim, no. 2382, from Abu Saʿid (may Allah be pleased with him).
(4) Manuscript B adds the word ʿaktharʾ (more).
(5) Concerning the transport of Zamzam water: Tirmidhi, no. 963, records—through ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr from ʿAʾisha—that she used to carry Zamzam water and affirmed that the Messenger of Allah did likewise; graded authentic by al-Albani. Al-Bayhaqi, no. 9987, transmits from Jabir that, while still in Madinah before the conquest of Mecca, the Prophet sent to Suhayl b. ʿAmr requesting Zamzam water; Suhayl dispatched two waterskins, and al-Albani judged the chain sound (al-Silsila al-sahiha, 2/544). Ibn Abi Shayba, no. 23722, reports from ʿAtaʾ that Kaʿb took twelve large water-skins of Zamzam to Syria for the people there to drink.
(6) Manuscript D reads al-sihafi. The correct form is al-saihani, a variety of dates from Madinah; see al-Azhari, Tahdhib al-Lugha, 5/109.
