, al-Juhfah (1), Qarn al-Manazil (2), and Yalamlam (3),

The modern road now reaches al-Madinah al-Munawwarah; the distance from the bank of Wadi al-Hulayfah to the Prophet’s Mosque is 13 km, and from that same bank to Makkah via Wadi al-Jamum it is 428 km. (1) Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 201: al-Juhfah (with a damma on the jīm and a sukūn on the ḥāʾ) is, according to the author of al-Mataliʿ, a large village with a pulpit on the route from Makkah to Madinah. Its former name was Mahyaʿah; it was called al-Juhfah because a flood once swept away the settlement and its inhabitants. It lies six miles from the Red Sea, eight stages from Madinah—some say seven—and three stages from Makkah. Tawdih al-Ahkam, 4/43: The village was once a flourishing stop for pilgrims travelling between the two sacred cities but was destroyed by floods, so pilgrims now assume ihram at the village of Rabigh, 22 miles to the west. On the Hijrah highway (the expressway from Madinah toward Makkah), the point that runs parallel to the former al-Juhfah is 208 km from Makkah. (2) Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 202: Qarn (with the rāʾ in sukun, unanimously) is the miqat for the people of Najd, situated about one day and one night from Makkah. It is also called Qarn al-Manazil and Qarn al-Thaʿalib. Reading the word with a fatḥah on the rāʾ is incorrect; Qaran (with fatḥah) is the name of a Yemeni tribe. Tayseer al-ʿAllam, 1/360: Today this miqat is better known as al-Sayl al-Kabir; the distance from the bed of the valley to Makkah is 78 km. (3) Al-Mutaliʿ, p. 202: Yalamlam—also pronounced Almamlam, with the initial hamzah replaced by yāʾ—is a mountain in the Tihamah range, two nights’ journey from Makkah; both pronunciations are recorded by al-Jawhari and others. Tawdih al-Ahkam, 4/44: Yalamlam is a large valley that descends from the Sarat mountains into Tihamah and empties into the Red Sea at a coastal area called al-Mujayrimah. The same name, Yalamlam, is applied to the entire course of the valley, including its mouth; the designated site for assuming ihram is along the route that passes through it.
