It is recommended to drink from the water of Zamzam and to drink one’s fill of it (1). While drinking (2), one should make whatever (3) lawful supplications (4) one wishes. Bathing with it, however, is not recommended (5).
As for visiting the mosques that have been built in Mecca other than the Sacred Mosque—such as the mosque beneath al-Safa and those on the slope of Abu Qubays (6), and the like of mosques erected over places connected to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions, such as the Mosque of the Birthplace (7) and others—setting out for any of these is not part of the Sunnah, nor did any of the leading scholars ever deem it recommended (8). What is prescribed is to go to the Sacred Mosque alone.
(1) In manuscript A: “minha” (from it).
(2) In manuscripts A and B: “shurbuha” (its drinking).
(3) In manuscript D: “yashaʾ” (he wills).
(4) Among the relevant reports is the one transmitted by Ikrima: whenever Ibn ʿAbbas drank Zamzam he would say, “Allahumma inni asʾaluka ʿilman nafian, wa rizqan wasian, wa shifaan min kulli daʾ” (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, ample provision, and a cure from every illness). Reported by al-Daraqutni, no. 2738; graded weak by al-Albani in al-Irwaʾ, 4/332.
(5) Within the Hanbali madhhab it is permissible to use Zamzam water to lift ritual impurity. A second report states that bathing alone with it is disliked, a view preferred by Shaykh al-Islam. A third report considers both wudu and ghusl with it disliked; see Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 12/600 and al-Insaf 1/27.
(6) In manuscript B: “wal-masjid alladhi” (and the mosque that).
(7) That is, the house in which the Prophet was born, later converted into a mosque; see Akhbar Makkah by al-Azraqi, 2/198.
(8) In manuscript B: “yastahibbu” (he considers it recommended).
