Manāsik al-ḤajjIbn Taimiya

Whoever is unable to procure the sacrificial offering must fast three days before the Day (1) of Sacrifice (2) and seven more when he returns (3).

He may begin the three fasts as soon as he enters the state of consecration for ʿumrah, which is the view most clearly upheld by the scholars (4). On this point there are three reports from Ahmad, may Allah be pleased with him:

– One report states (5) that he should observe them even before assuming iḥrām for ʿumrah (6).

– Another holds (7) that he is not to fast them until after entering iḥrām for ḥajj (8).

(1) The word “yawm” (day) is missing from manuscript J. (2) Shaykh al-Islam held that the three days must be fasted before the Day of Sacrifice, whereas the authoritative Hanbali position requires beginning the fast at dawn on the Day of Sacrifice itself; cf. Sharh al-Umdah 5/66 and al-Insaf 3/513. (3) Manuscript D adds the phrase “ila ahlihi” (to his family). (4) Manuscripts J and D read: “wa fihi” (and in it). (5) Manuscript A reads: “lahu an” (he may). (6) Shaykh al-Islam states in Sharh al-Umdah 5/68: “Al-Qadi and Ibn Aqil report another narration permitting the fast before entering ihram for the ‘umrah, starting from the first months of Hajj.” Al-Mughni 3/418 comments: “Advancing the fast to a time prior to the ihram for ‘umrah is invalid. We know of no scholar who allows it, except for a single narration some Hanbalis attribute to Ahmad, which is weak; fasting may not precede the cause that obliges it, and this view conflicts with consensus, so attributing it to Ahmad is unfitting.” (7) This is also the view of the Maliki and Shafi‘i schools; see Bidayat al-Mujtahid 2/133 and Rawdat al-Talibin 3/53. (8) The clause “illa ba‘d al-ihram bi-l-hajj, wa qila yasumuha” (except after entering ihram for Hajj; some said he may fast them) appears in manuscript B as: “qila lahu an …”
