nor to turn away from You or from Your House (1);
O Allah, let wellbeing accompany me in my body, sound health in my frame, and protection in my religion; make my return praiseworthy, grant me the ability to obey You for as long as You keep me alive, and combine for me (2) the best (3) of this world and the Hereafter. Truly, You have power over all things (4).

If he were to stand at the door and supplicate there without pressing himself against the House (5), that too would be commendable.

When he turns to leave he should neither stop nor look back, nor walk backward (6). Al-Thaʿalibi (7) says in Fiqh al-Lughah (8): “al-qahqarā is the gait of a person who moves in reverse.”

(1) The words enclosed in brackets are missing from ms. A. (2) The term “bayna” (between) is absent from ms. D. (3) Ms. J reads: “khayri.” (4) Al-Bayhaqi states: “These words are by al-Shafi‘i, may Allah have mercy on him, and they are sound.” Al-Tabarani also transmits it in al-Du‘a, no. 883, through Abd al-Razzaq. See al-Umm 2/243; al-Sunan al-Kubra 5/268. Continuation: Shaykh al-Islam adds, “Then he should drink from Zamzam and touch the Black Stone.” See al-Furu‘ 6/65. (5) Ms. A has al-bayt; it is omitted from D. (6) Al-Furu‘ 6/65 records: “Ibn Aqil and Ibn al-Zaghuni said: The person bidding farewell to the House should not turn his back to it until it is out of sight. Abu al-Abbas remarked: This is a reprehensible innovation.” (7) Mss. B and D read: al-Tha‘labi. (8) The phrase “fi fiqh al-lughah” (in the jurisprudence of language) is missing from B; mss. A and D have simply “fi al-lughah” (in language). See Fiqh al-Lughah, p. 136.
