until the third day (1) (2).
The Sunnah is for the imam to lead the people in prayer at Mina, with all the pilgrims praying behind him (3).
It is recommended not to forsake the prayer in Mina’s mosque—the Mosque of al-Khayf—together with the imam; for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, along with Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, used to lead the people there, shortening the four-cycle prayers without (4) combining them, and all the worshippers (5)—whether residents of Mecca or otherwise—shortened behind them.
The only wording authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is that he said:
“People of Mecca, complete your prayers, for we are a traveling people,”
when he had led them (6) in Mecca itself (7).
If the people have no general imam (8), then one of them should lead his own companions.
Note that the mosque was erected after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; it did not exist during his lifetime.
